Béatrice ‘’Bea’’Arthur était une comédienne américaine e
t une chanteuse, sa carrière immense couvre soixante et dix ans . Elle fut connue dans des succès comme la série ‘’Maude’’ dans les années 70s et aussi comme Dorothy Zbornak dans les années 80s dans la série bien connue ‘’The Golden Girls’’ qui lui rapporta pour les deux séries un Emmy Award.
Madame Arthur est née sous le nom de Bernice Frankel fille de Philip et de Rebeca Frankel à New York le 13 mai 1922. La famille
déménagera à Cambridge au Maryland où ses parents opéraient une boutique de linges pour femmes. Elle ira à l’école Linden Hall une école de filles à Lilitz en Pennsylvanie avant de s’inscrire au collège Blackstone en Virginie aujourd’hui disparu où elle était très active dans la production de drames.
Depuis 1947 Béatrice étudie au ‘’Dramatic Workshop’’d’une
nouvelle école à New York avec une influence germanique de son directeur Allemand Erwin Piscator. Elle commencera sa carrière d’actrice comme membre partielle d’un groupe de théâtre de Broadway au Cherry Lane Theatre à New York vers la fin des années 40s. Sur le plateau ses rôles incluaient ‘’Lucy Brown’’ dans la revue de 1954 hors-Broadway de la première de Marc Blitzstein d’une adaptation anglaise de Kurt Weill’s Treepenny Opera ‘’Yente the Matchmaker’’ dans la première de 1964 ‘’Fiddler on the Roof’’ à Broadway et un portrait du gagnant de 1966 de ‘’Vera Charles’’ à Angela Lansbury’s Mame.
Elle reprendra un rôle dans une version de 1974 l’opposant à nulle autre que la très célèbre Lucille Ball. En 1981 elle apparait dans ‘’The Floating Lightbulb’’ de Woody Allen. En 1972 Arthur joue un personnage dans la série ‘’Maude’’ , elle y joue le rôle de Maude Findlay un personnage libéral assez expressif vivant dans la petite communauté de Tuckahoe , Westchester County, New York avec son mari Walter(Bill Macy) et sa fille divorcé Carol(Adrienne Barbeau).
Cette émission était tout le contraire de All in the Family où Arthur apparut une couple de fois comme une féministe et une antithèse et l’opposé totale du conservatisme d’Archie Bunker qui décrivait Maude comme une fanatique du nouveau monde. Le rôle de Maude lui gagna plusieurs nominations d’Emmy et Golden Globe incluant sa victoire d’un Emmy en 1977 pour ‘’Outstanding Lead Actress in a comedy Series’’. En 1978 elle co-anime le spectacle mal reçu de “”The Star Wars Holiday Special’’ dans lequel elle eu une chanson et quelques pas de danse à faire dans ‘’Mos Eisley Cantina’’.
Après une petite apparition dans la sitcom sans succès ‘’Amanda’s’’(une version américaine de la série anglaise Family Towers) elle jouera dans la série qui devint un hit au palmarès ‘’The Golden Girls’’ en 1985 où elle jouait le rôle de Dorothy Zbornak une enseignante substitue divorcée vivant dans une maison de Miami qui appartenait à Blanche Devereaux(rue McClanahan). Ses co-locataires incluaient Rose Nylund(Betty White) et la mère sicilienne de Dorothy Sophia Petrillo(Estelle Getty).
Getty était plus jeune que Arthur dans la vrai vie et pourtant on la maquillait pour quelle est l’air beaucoup plus vieille que Dorothy. Dorothy avait un sens de l’humour assez spécial et souvent les farces goûtait le sarcasme à pleine papilles.Cette série fut un méga hit et logea dans les dix meilleure séries pendant plus de 6 saisons et ses performances lui donnèrent accès à plusieurs nominations d’Emmy dont un gagné en 1988 et après 7 ans de la même série elle décide de quitté le show et en 1992 la série fut déménagé de NBC à CBS et changea le nom pour Golden Palace avec trois nouvelles actrices qui reprirent les rôles principaux. Arthur fait des apparitions surprises dans une épisode en deux parties et le nouveau show ne durera qu’une saison.
Après son départ des ‘’Golden Girls elle fera plusieurs apparitions à la télévision , dans un cartoon américain ’’Futurama’’ et dans une épisode qui a été nominée aux Emmys ‘’Amazon Women in the Mood’’ pour la voix de Femputer qui commandait l’Amazonienne géante. elle apparut aussi dans une épisode de ‘’Malcom in the Middle’’ comme la gardienne de Dewey et elle sera en nomination comme guest-star aux Emmys pour sa performance . Elle fera aussi le rôle de la mère de Larry David dans le show ‘’Curb your Enthusiasm”.
En 2002 elle retourne à Broadway jouant dans ‘’Bea Arthur on Broadway: Just Between Friends’’ qui est une collection d’histoires et de chansons(accompagné du musicien Billy Goldenberg) basé sur sa vie et sa carrière. Son spectacle fut en nomination pour un Tony Award pour ‘’Best Special Theatrical Event’’. En 2005 elle participe dans la ‘’Comedy Central Roast of Pamela Anderson’’ décrivant de façon comique une partie du livre de Pamela Anderson expliquant en conseils divers comment recevoir une sodomie le tout dans l’humour le plus complet.
En 1999 Béatrice dit à un journaliste quelle fut influencé dans sa carrière par trois personnages: le premier Sid Caesar m’apprit les méthodes pour jouer , Lee Strasberg me montra qu’est-ce que j’appelle la réalité et l’original de ‘’Treepenny Opera’’ et Lotte Lenya m’appris l’économie. Dans sa carrière Arthur gagna l’American Theatre Wing’s Tony Award en 1966 comme Best Featured Actress dans un musical pour sa performance de Vera Charles dans la production de Broadway de Jerry Herman ‘’Mame’’.
Elle reçu plus tard the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Emmy Award pour Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series deux fois , un en 1977 pour ‘’Maude’’ et un en 1988 pour ‘’The Golden Girls’’. Elle sera introduit au Hall of fame en 2008. Le 8 juin 2008 ‘’The Golden Girls’’ a mérité le trophée ‘’The Pop Culture Award au sixième gala annuel de TV Land Awards et Arthur accepta le trophée avec ses ex co-stars Estelle Getty et Betty White.
Elle fut marié 2 fois le premier mariage avec Robert Allan Arthur un Screenwriter pour la télévision ainsi que producteur et directeur et son deuxième mariage avec un directeur Gene Saks de 1950 à 1978 avec qui elle adopta deux fils(Matthew né le 14 juillet 1961 )qui est acteur aujourd’hui et Daniel(né le 8 mai 1964) un designer de plateau. Les deux enfants travaillent dans le même domaine que leur parents.
Dans les petites heures du matin Bernice Frankel plus connue sous le nom de Béatrice Arthur rend l’âme le 25 avril 2009 dans sa maison de Los Angeles à l’âge de 86 ans , en plus de ses deux fils elle laisse sa soeur qui reste à Montréal,Québec et deux grands enfants. Adieu Bea!
