Pirates of the Caribbean 4 (review)

I am saddened by the fact that this seems to be my first review that is mostly negative. I went to see it in the Imax 3D format. I am left melancholy by the feeling I watched it on a seven inch portable DVD player.
Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow is back. But that’s about the best thing I could say about this instalment. Gone are many of the characters that made the first three films so memorable and enjoyable. Both Orlando Bloom’s Will Turner and Keira Knightly’s Elizabeth Swann are gone. And their absence is felt at the deepest levels. Even the Black Pearl makes a mere cameo as a ship in a bottle. While Geoffrey Rush’s Hector Barbossa is back, he is under used and seems to be lost in a sea of secondary characters. Personally, I blame these losses on the disappearance of Gore Verbinski, who literally seems to have been the heart and soul of the entire mythos.
